I typically like to work closely with the client to get the best understanding possible of what exactly they want from me. However, creative freedom is a great thing, and usually clients are surprised by how their ideas could go from good to great with just a few tweaks.

I always start with a few sketches of different idea directions. Once the client picks one, it's off I go into my cave until I'm able to spit out a successful product. From there, I will contact the client again for more revisions (if any). For freelance work I usually charge per hour, with creative concepts and minor revisions included. Excessive revisions are subject to additional fees, to prevent the client from having me redo entire projects over and over.
